In this video, I show you what it’s like to be camping in temperatures colder than your gear rating. On this particular trip, the weather forecast was for 0ºF (-18ºC). The storm unexpectedly cleared, dropping temperatures to nearly -30ºF (-34ºC). I only brought gear rated to 0ºF (-18ºC). It was an extremely long, tough night. I had some nerve damage in my feet from a month from inadequate insulation. This is a video to show you that it’s best to bring gear rated 20ºF (16ºC) better than the possibly lowest temperature you expect. This will help prevent injury and pain. I love camping in the cold and I’m highly experienced. That said, I was caught off guard by relying on the weather forecast, so use this video as a cautionary tale.
